Shelby learned the importance of volunteerism and commitment to community from her mother and grandmother who could always be found supporting causes that were near to their hearts.
Leveraging this life-long commitment to community, Shelby started Giving Advisors in 2021 in order to help individuals, families, family offices, and foundations looking to cultivate deeper meaning from their giving. In order to do that, she walks alongside funders as they define their mission, values, strategic funding priorities, and metrics for success. She does the research to understand an issue, finds and vets mission aligned nonprofits, negotiates gift agreements, and measures impact. Additionally, she facilitates conversations within families to help the younger generations understand the importance of family values and mission, while helping the older generation understand that giving strategies with younger generations are likely to change – and that it’s okay and expected.
Shelby has a BA in Political Science and Education from Hollins University and an MBA from Seattle University. Additionally, she has a graduate level certificate in nonprofit management with a concentration in program evaluation, fundraising, and financial management from Texas A&M Bush School of Government and Public Service as well as a designation as a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP®) from the American College of Financial Services. Together these experiences and this associated body of knowledge allow her to understand and drive practices in the nonprofit space while working with clients and their most trusted advisors.
Shelby spends the bulk of her volunteer time supporting the Austin Community Foundation Women’s Fund where she serves on both the Steering and Grants Committees. Aside from that, she has spent her time supporting St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, the Women’s Symphony League, the Central Texas Food Bank, and when able – registers people to vote in Travis County. She and her husband have two college-aged daughters and a wheaten terrier named Tipper.
