What Am I Inheriting?

$20.00

Description

This exercise enables family members to recall the stories, events, and messages handed down from previous generations by asking themselves questions such as: who are the characters in my family history? What world events comprised the backdrop of their lives? What choices did they make in light of those events? The act of writing down family history intensifies the participants’ sense of what they are “inheriting” in terms of values and legacies beyond financial inheritance and how that informs their own lives.

I facilitated What Am I Inheriting? and Motivational Values at the Leadership Development Institute for a program training young leadership who are newly involved with the Miami Jewish Community. The participants got so much out of both tools and engaged in very meaningful conversations around leadership, identity and values, as well as sharing their own stories. Every time I have used these tools with an individual, family, or group, they always take the conversation to another level.

In working with families of wealth I often am asked how to best engage the next generation. I am fortunate to have completed the 101 Training and have the What Am I Inheriting? tool available to me. In one particular instance, I was able to sit with the parents and put together their family timeline. We then used this in a meeting with their adult children. Since the parents had initiated the discussion, the children felt comfortable asking questions about family events to their parents. They had a very robust, lively and fun conversation about their family. So much so that the children began to add items to the timeline that the parents were then able to ask questions about. What Am I Inheriting? provoked a heartening family conversation where everyone learned and shared together. Lots of good energy was created and the family is still seeing the positive impact today!!
