The Generational Personalities booklet and Generational Profiles posters is a popular and most requested tool/presentation from our nonprofit development colleagues. The Interactive nature of using the Profile posters and the information in the Generational Personalities booklet generates a ton of conversation and assistance. Especially when the group includes several “generations” of colleagues together.

This is one my favorite tools! Generational Profiles and Generational Personalities allows people to engage in conversations about our assumptions across generations; how we can address five generations in philanthropy; and what we have in common instead of what separates us. Participants always have a lot of fun with the facilitation, which makes it all even better.

We have found so many settings where it has been helpful to facilitate cross-generational conversation. Generational Personalities and the Generational Profiles leads the way to open up dialogue, understanding and connection. It is such a great, hands-on, interactive experience that ends up being a lot of fun for people. We love the creativity that we see happening as people diagram the different generations. We also have seen how the tool can help breakdown stereotypes about the different generations. We have found that facilitating these tools is beneficial in many different settings –at family meetings, with groups of wealth advisors, nonprofit professionals, and at conferences. We are excited to use it shortly with a local multi-generational Women in Philanthropy group.

During the Generational Profiles and Generational Personalities exercises, the rich generational insights shared and the coming together to discuss attitudes and behaviors that resulted was, for me, one of the most fascinating parts of the workshop. It got participants trying on other generational perspectives for the first time. For instance, how did a Traditionalist view the effects of Columbine on the Millennials? What did a Millennial believe to be the impact of that same event on her attitudes? The generational outlay was sparked immediately and happening right in front of me. It was so telling. These tool exercises set the group up to talk to each other and learn from each other. This not only cultivated rich in-session conversation, but carried on among the participants who continued talking to each other well after the program ended.
