Talking about philanthropy can be challenging. Exploring Giving is a tool we use at Central Indiana Community Foundation to prompt conversations and to help clients gain insight into themselves and others. They are a great resource for any group that needs an opening ice breaker. We often suggest the cards to families for a Thanksgiving dinner activity or any multigen gathering to explore what giving means to each person. I highly recommend this tool for anyone working with individuals or groups who are exploring how to make philanthropy more meaningful or how to open conversations around the topic of charitable giving.

We love to use Exploring Giving as ice-breakers for group and family meetings. Recently, we used them at an event launching our Center for Family Philanthropy to generate meaningful conversations over dinner. It really worked and everyone walked away feeling like they got to know each other a little bit better. We gave a set of cards to everyone as gifts so they could use them with their extended families. We also had the Exploring Giving decks branded with our organization’s name and logo, which was a nice touch.

Sometimes conversations about the most important things are the hardest to begin. I have found that the Exploring Giving cards offer a fun and accessible way to kick-start discussions that dismantle assumptions, create insights and show the way forward.
