These 21/64 Principles of Practice codify and document the way 21/64 Certified Advisors agree to approach professional work and connect to the 21/64 Certified Advisors community and the philanthropic field. They were collectively developed in consultation with 21/64 Certified Advisors. As ethical guidelines, these Principles of Practice are integral to the 21/64 Certified Advisor designation and are aligned with 21/64’s Values and approach.
The nature of work with individuals, families, communities and organizations using the 21/64 Approach can be intimate and is transformative. These Principles of Practice not only serve as a guide for practitioners, but also allow the public at large to recognize the commitment 21/64 Certified Advisors make to themselves, their practice and the field.
As of August 1, 2021, to remain a 21/64 Certified Advisor in good standing, advisors will be required to:
- Certify to uphold these Principles of Practice;
- Commit to peer and life-long learning as a 21/64 Certified Advisor; and,
- Agree that violations of these principles may be subject to the removal of 21/64 Certified Advisor designation upon a Peer Review Process.
SELF
- I exhibit honesty, integrity and professionalism with whomever I’m working, including but not limited to colleagues, clients, donors, grantees, community members and organizational partners in my sector.
- I endeavor to deepen the impact of, including but not limited to, multigenerational family philanthropy and other endeavors while striving to do no harm or causing inadvertent or intentional negative effects.
- I align with 21/64’s Statement on Racial Justice and in my own work strive for diversity, equity and inclusiveness in my practice; this includes developing content and processes that contribute to just and equitable outcomes for a society that is ever-changing.
- I will actively listen, lift up others’ voices and learn from others’ lived experiences and knowledge in ways that are authentic, respectful and not extractive.
- I serve clients/donors within the scope of my expertise and lived experience and will remain within the bounds of advice that I am qualified, and not qualified, to give.
PRACTICE
- I respect the intellectual property of 21/64 and my colleagues’ copywritten and trademarked tools, and therefore I will ask for prior written consent before citing, referencing or using the name or image of a 21/64 tool in published public spaces. I will respect the ideas of 21/64 and my colleagues and will therefore give appropriate credit and written citations whenever I am using them. I will uphold the legal and best practice of citing references appropriately and seek permission from 21/64 before adapting tools.
- I respect confidentiality and will maintain appropriate levels of privacy within the donor, client and family system. I will be transparent about my confidentiality and privacy practices with donors, clients and colleagues.
- I am committed, not only to being the expert, but also to taking a consultative approach based on the Action Research Methodology, in the dimension of my work with donors/clients about their values and vision. Additionally, I commit to encouraging them to consider the interest of the communities that they support as the highest priority, before the advancement of myself or my firm/organization.
- I recognize that being clear about the purpose of my work clarity of purpose is part of the success of doing this work. I’ll do my best to seek and offer this clarity to my clients/donors and integrate it into my business practice.
- I will abide by any applicable conflict of interest policies in my jurisdiction and commit to being transparent about my involvements by providing prior full disclosure of any real or perceived conflict of interest with those with whom I work.
FIELD
- I strive to build an environment of collegiality and mutual respect among professionals in this network and the larger field in which I work.
- I recognize that this is a generous community that requires our collective support. I will contribute ideas, resources, feedback and thought leadership where and when I can.
- I will, whenever possible, amplify the voices of my fellow 21/64 Certified Advisors and in particular, make space for BIPOC colleagues’ leadership and perspectives.
- I will not knowingly state untrue or misleading information, both publicly and privately, and will not misrepresent or demean my professional peers.
- I will encourage fellow 21/64 Certified Advisors to embrace and practice these principles and help hold us accountable.
The large community of 21/64 Certified Advisors collectively contributed to this body of Principles of Practice which codify and document the way 21/64 Certified Advisors approach our work, manage business and connect to our community and the field. These ethical norms are integral to the 21/64 Certified Advisor designation and are aligned with 21/64’s values (link to be provided) and approach.
21/64 Certified Advisors are individuals from a range of industries, ethnicities and countries. Our common thread is in how we help others make more strategic decisions around their time, talent, treasure and ties through an understanding of their identity and values. We aim for this transformative work to have positive impact on relationships with self and family, local community and the global world.
Therefore, we hope that this will not only be relevant to those interested in embodying this approach in your work, but that these Principles of Practice will help uplift your acclaim and credibility in the field as you continue to advise others to allocate resources toward positive social change.
In order to keep your designation in good standing, we ask that you revisit these principles and renew your agreement annually, which also allows your access to 21/64 Certified Advisor exclusive ongoing connection and learning. Violations of these principles may be subject to the reversal of the 21/64 Certified Advisor designation upon Peer Review Process.
