Roleplay – Tool Talk

Date: July 16, 2024, 1:00-2:00pm ET

In 2024, we're continuing our Tool Talk series which will take place on a quarterly basis. Tool Talks are workshops that provide insight into 21/64's uniquely developed tools, allow you to experience them firsthand, hear from others who use the tool, and ask questions about the tools and how to facilitate them.

The third tool we'll discuss this year is our Roleplay tool.

The work of giving can be serious business, but it doesn’t always have to be. 21/64, in partnership with Youth Philanthropy Connect & The Frieda C. Fox Family Foundation, created roleplay as a tool to help you leverage an often overlooked way to explore your role in philanthropy: play. This interactive tool helps users gain awareness of how they act in different roles—both personally and as a funder—to make mindful choices about the roles they want to play. Neuroscience shows that play relaxes our brains and leads to better problem solving. Giving people something they can touch and move can spark understanding and make heady, conceptual ideas more accessible. It can also benefit relationships, as play opens us to clarity, creativity and new ways to communicate with others. According to psychologist Stephen Treat, parents who play with their young children have a better chance at bonding with their adult children. In addition, play researcher Bob Fagan has said that play “generates optimism, fosters empathy and promotes a sense of belonging and community”. These are some of the very same traits cultivated in philanthropy. roleplay is a great exercise for youth and next gen funders, families who give together, foundation boards or junior boards, giving circles, and groups who make decisions together.

roleplay is an interactive toolkit designed for up to 10 users and comes inside a branded, sleek chrome carry case, which includes:

40 Miniatures: these small toys are spread out on a table (or floor) and users can choose from a selection such as animals, monuments, sea creatures and vehicles to represent the dreamed and dreaded roles they play in their giving.
10 Activity Mats: participants use the mat in the exercise to explore these roles, what they can learn from their aspirations, and how these versions of themselves interact with others.
1 Facilitator’s Guide: families, groups and advisors can engage in the roleplay exercise with the easy, step-by-step instructions and explanations provided in this detailed how-to manual.

Join us for a walk through on this tool led by 21/64 Senior Consultant Diane Higginbotham.

This week, I participated in 21/64’s Talking About Money Training to challenge one of the oldest taboos – money. The team and facilitators are excellent, creative, and very engaging! Thank you to 21/64 for giving me a framework to look at how my own money story informs/inhibits money conversations with my family and clients, and practice facilitating tools to add value to my conversations around wealth, legacy, and philanthropic planning. It was wonderful and fun to learn alongside a diverse set of peers in the field. We even had an awesome guy from Budapest in our group!

This training exceeded my expectations and really took my learning from the 101 Training deeper and resonated with where I am professionally.

Other than grad school, it was the best professional development program I’ve ever been a part of.  It taught me a new way of approaching my work and interacting with donor families.

I highly recommend this training, even if you are quite experienced in family meeting facilitation and client management. In addition to providing outstanding content, the training works on almost a meta level — not only are you covering the toolkits and techniques for facilitating family meetings in detail, but in addition you are able to observe skilled facilitators demonstrate these techniques in action as they work with the group. You are able to reflect about yourself and about the approach you bring to client work as you use the tools, and you are also able to learn from and share best practices with the highly experienced group of peers who attend the training alongside you. A highly valuable use of time!

The training was such a life-changing and surprising gift. I am really excited about this idea of bringing my own experiences to bear on a consultancy that would combine philanthropy, family dynamics and youth development.

The size of the group created a safe space to have candid discussions and practice skills in a non-threatening environment. It was a content-rich experience with tangible takeaways.
