Recording Your Story as a Legacy

Date: September 10, 2024, 1:00-2:30pm ET

Each of us has a compelling personal story grounded in our individual experiences, passions, and goals. Our lives are adventure stories, filled with love and loss, challenges and rewards, failures and successes. Like ripples in a pond, we each leave an indelible mark on the people around us, and on future generations. The same holds true for the clients, donors, and families whose legacies we are dedicated to stewarding. As a society, we understand the importance of creating estate plans, trusts, and wills to safeguard assets, but too often we neglect recording that which is arguably most important for the wellbeing of future generations: our stories.

In this brand new Workshop, 21/64 Director of Training and Engagement Rich Polt will lead a panel of experts in a spirited conversation about recording our stories as a legacy for future generations. Together we’ll explore the opportunities and challenges to these projects; how to involve multiple generational voices; different ways to record stories (e.g., video, audio, novel); and how these projects can serve as a vehicle for advancing related initiatives (e.g., values exploration, board expansion, family retreats). Using examples from their own production companies, presenters will challenge attendees to further clarify the narratives within their own lives and those of their clients. Our panelists will be:

Debbie Brodsky, a three-time Emmy Award-winning television producer, is the founder of DMB Pictures, a boutique video production company specializing in creating legacy films for family offices, foundations, and nonprofit organizations. Debbie’s passion is making people feel comfortable and authentic while telling memorable stories.

Rutger Bruining is founder & CEO of StoryTerrace, a leading ghostwriting service, which aims to create a world where every life story is captured in a meaningful way. Its memoir-writing service has created over 4,000 biographies using 650+ professional writers, an in-house editorial team and its proprietary technology platform.

Joanna Kong is the Executive Director for the Sun Family Foundation, a private charitable foundation focused on advancing educational opportunities and the well-being of the underserved in Orange County. Her family undertook an internal legacy video project, which later served as the basis for a publicly distributed animated legacy book. Joanna will share about their experience doing this work.

Shanaysha Sauls is President and CEO of the Baltimore Community Foundation. Several years ago, timed with the foundation’s 50th anniversary, BCF undertook both video and written legacy projects. Shanaysha will share about their experience.

This session will take place on Zoom.

This week, I participated in 21/64’s Talking About Money Training to challenge one of the oldest taboos – money. The team and facilitators are excellent, creative, and very engaging! Thank you to 21/64 for giving me a framework to look at how my own money story informs/inhibits money conversations with my family and clients, and practice facilitating tools to add value to my conversations around wealth, legacy, and philanthropic planning. It was wonderful and fun to learn alongside a diverse set of peers in the field. We even had an awesome guy from Budapest in our group!

This training exceeded my expectations and really took my learning from the 101 Training deeper and resonated with where I am professionally.

Other than grad school, it was the best professional development program I’ve ever been a part of.  It taught me a new way of approaching my work and interacting with donor families.

I highly recommend this training, even if you are quite experienced in family meeting facilitation and client management. In addition to providing outstanding content, the training works on almost a meta level — not only are you covering the toolkits and techniques for facilitating family meetings in detail, but in addition you are able to observe skilled facilitators demonstrate these techniques in action as they work with the group. You are able to reflect about yourself and about the approach you bring to client work as you use the tools, and you are also able to learn from and share best practices with the highly experienced group of peers who attend the training alongside you. A highly valuable use of time!

The training was such a life-changing and surprising gift. I am really excited about this idea of bringing my own experiences to bear on a consultancy that would combine philanthropy, family dynamics and youth development.

The size of the group created a safe space to have candid discussions and practice skills in a non-threatening environment. It was a content-rich experience with tangible takeaways.
