Exploring Series – Tool Talk – April 18, 2024

Date: April 18, 2024, 1:00-2:00pm ET

In 2024, we're continuing our Tool Talk series which will take place on a quarterly basis. Tool Talks are workshops that provide insight into 21/64's uniquely developed tools, allow you to experience them firsthand, hear from others who use the tool, and ask questions about the tools and how to facilitate them.

The second tool we'll discuss this year is our Exploring Series of tools.

Family conversations around giving and philanthropy can be tough to initiate. So many topics to potentially explore, where and how to begin? Start with the Exploring Giving deck, which lets you choose from among 50 topic cards or make up your own using one of the “wild cards.” Pick one or more topics to discuss with family members on any given occasion. No matter what your generation, whether you’re a 14-year-old millennial or a traditionalist of 84, have fun as you learn from and about each other. 21/64 created this tool in collaboration with Relative Solutions.

21/64 and Relative Solutions joined forces once again to update the 2nd tool in the Exploring series, Exploring Wealth. The 50 cards in this deck offer families, foundation boards, family offices and advisors to families a way to unpack the building blocks of wealth. Each card features an open-ended question inviting users to discuss role models, values, motivations, and other aspects surrounding wealth in a safe and comfortable way. The cards encourage conversations about what it means to have wealth and to clarify and express values about wealth. The discussion questions provide a unique forum to find comfort and understanding around wealth and they help foster fruitful dialogue concerning this complicated topic.

Given that the next gen stands to become the most significant donors in U.S. history and will shape our world in profound ways, this tool is an opportunity for the families and professionals who support next gen to ask them key questions about the donors they are becoming, as well as for next gen donor’s own self exploration. This deck of 50 question cards can help users to be intentional about their choices, strategic in creating action plans, and effective in exploring their philanthropic approach with others. Each card features an open-ended question inviting users to discuss role models, impact, generational giving, values and aspirations in an accessible way. The discussion questions provide facilitators and users alike with a unique forum to find comfort and understanding and help foster dialogue concerning this complex topic.

Join us for a walk through on this series of tools led by 21/64 Senior Consultant Robyn Schein.

This week, I participated in 21/64’s Talking About Money Training to challenge one of the oldest taboos – money. The team and facilitators are excellent, creative, and very engaging! Thank you to 21/64 for giving me a framework to look at how my own money story informs/inhibits money conversations with my family and clients, and practice facilitating tools to add value to my conversations around wealth, legacy, and philanthropic planning. It was wonderful and fun to learn alongside a diverse set of peers in the field. We even had an awesome guy from Budapest in our group!

This training exceeded my expectations and really took my learning from the 101 Training deeper and resonated with where I am professionally.

Other than grad school, it was the best professional development program I’ve ever been a part of.  It taught me a new way of approaching my work and interacting with donor families.

I highly recommend this training, even if you are quite experienced in family meeting facilitation and client management. In addition to providing outstanding content, the training works on almost a meta level — not only are you covering the toolkits and techniques for facilitating family meetings in detail, but in addition you are able to observe skilled facilitators demonstrate these techniques in action as they work with the group. You are able to reflect about yourself and about the approach you bring to client work as you use the tools, and you are also able to learn from and share best practices with the highly experienced group of peers who attend the training alongside you. A highly valuable use of time!

The training was such a life-changing and surprising gift. I am really excited about this idea of bringing my own experiences to bear on a consultancy that would combine philanthropy, family dynamics and youth development.

The size of the group created a safe space to have candid discussions and practice skills in a non-threatening environment. It was a content-rich experience with tangible takeaways.
