Courageous Conversations in Leadership

These days, leading productive conversations among individuals with differing viewpoints can be challenging at best and often fraught with peril. Yet, the work we do with multigenerational families, clients, and donors, often demands that we tread carefully into these difficult waters. Whether we’re leading conversations around politics, race, gender, religion, money, or relationships, situational awareness and active listening have become critical skills for not only navigating discourse but arriving at productive outcomes.

“Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”

-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Courageous Conversations in Leadership is designed for people seeking the capacity and skills to thrive in these situations, steering them towards constructive results. Throughout this five-week program, participants experience and explore ways to generate awareness, catalyze courage, create brave space, use active listening, and facilitate discussions on difficult topics. This is a come-as-you-are encounter. Attendees are not required to have a specific point of view or subscribe to a certain set of politics. We only ask for an openness to learn, share, engage, and be vulnerable. We are grateful to Simon Greer, the founder of Courageous Conversations, and his colleague Tina Grace who joins 21/64 faculty to lead this program.

Testimonials.

This week, I participated in 21/64’s Talking About Money Training to challenge one of the oldest taboos – money. The team and facilitators are excellent, creative, and very engaging! Thank you to 21/64 for giving me a framework to look at how my own money story informs/inhibits money conversations with my family and clients, and practice facilitating tools to add value to my conversations around wealth, legacy, and philanthropic planning. It was wonderful and fun to learn alongside a diverse set of peers in the field. We even had an awesome guy from Budapest in our group!

This training exceeded my expectations and really took my learning from the 101 Training deeper and resonated with where I am professionally.

Other than grad school, it was the best professional development program I’ve ever been a part of.  It taught me a new way of approaching my work and interacting with donor families.

I highly recommend this training, even if you are quite experienced in family meeting facilitation and client management. In addition to providing outstanding content, the training works on almost a meta level — not only are you covering the toolkits and techniques for facilitating family meetings in detail, but in addition you are able to observe skilled facilitators demonstrate these techniques in action as they work with the group. You are able to reflect about yourself and about the approach you bring to client work as you use the tools, and you are also able to learn from and share best practices with the highly experienced group of peers who attend the training alongside you. A highly valuable use of time!

The training was such a life-changing and surprising gift. I am really excited about this idea of bringing my own experiences to bear on a consultancy that would combine philanthropy, family dynamics and youth development.

The size of the group created a safe space to have candid discussions and practice skills in a non-threatening environment. It was a content-rich experience with tangible takeaways.
