Grand Street at 20 – May 21, 2024

Learnings from the Next Gen Program that started it all

Date: May 21, 2024, 12:30-2:00pm ET

21/64’s Grand Street program was launched in 2003 for individuals in their 20s and 30s, who were stepping into their imminent responsibilities of stewarding family philanthropy. Grand Street, one of the first next gen programs in the philanthropic space, offered next gen donors a place to talk about their philanthropic backgrounds as, at the time, they didn’t know others in similar situations of philanthropic opportunity. Grand Street quickly became a trusted space and forum for clarifying philanthropic roles and identities among a group of like-minded peers.

Over the last twelve months, with support from the Joyce and Irving Goldman Family Foundation, 21/64 founder Sharna Goldseker interviewed twenty program alumni to learn how they were impacted by this experience. During this special session, Sharna will present her findings and Grand Streeters Joya Sonnenfeldt, Sarah Rueven, and Jeff Rapaport will reflect on the research and share their own reflections on the program. The gathering will also showcase sector leaders, Jaspar Leahy and Joel Schwarz who lead next gen programs. Together, we will explore how the lessons learned from this two-decade initiative could inform your organization's next gen efforts.

Speaker Bios:

  • Joya Sonnenfeldt is a New York City-based attorney and has been actively engaged in her family’s philanthropic activities including through the Goldman Sonnenfeldt Foundation and the Joyce and Irving Goldman Family Foundation.
  • Sarah Rueven is a New York City-based registered dietitian. She is the founder of Rooted Wellness. She sits on the board of The Sarah and Daniel Rueven Foundation.
  • Jeff Rapaport is the Chief Investment Officer of Seaview Capital Partners, a long-term oriented investment partnership. Jeff is also focused on a range of philanthropic efforts centered around health and education.

This session will take place on Zoom.

This week, I participated in 21/64’s Talking About Money Training to challenge one of the oldest taboos – money. The team and facilitators are excellent, creative, and very engaging! Thank you to 21/64 for giving me a framework to look at how my own money story informs/inhibits money conversations with my family and clients, and practice facilitating tools to add value to my conversations around wealth, legacy, and philanthropic planning. It was wonderful and fun to learn alongside a diverse set of peers in the field. We even had an awesome guy from Budapest in our group!

This training exceeded my expectations and really took my learning from the 101 Training deeper and resonated with where I am professionally.

Other than grad school, it was the best professional development program I’ve ever been a part of.  It taught me a new way of approaching my work and interacting with donor families.

I highly recommend this training, even if you are quite experienced in family meeting facilitation and client management. In addition to providing outstanding content, the training works on almost a meta level — not only are you covering the toolkits and techniques for facilitating family meetings in detail, but in addition you are able to observe skilled facilitators demonstrate these techniques in action as they work with the group. You are able to reflect about yourself and about the approach you bring to client work as you use the tools, and you are also able to learn from and share best practices with the highly experienced group of peers who attend the training alongside you. A highly valuable use of time!

The training was such a life-changing and surprising gift. I am really excited about this idea of bringing my own experiences to bear on a consultancy that would combine philanthropy, family dynamics and youth development.

The size of the group created a safe space to have candid discussions and practice skills in a non-threatening environment. It was a content-rich experience with tangible takeaways.
