Beyond giving: Generation Impact and the crises of 2020
Alliance Magazine - October 21, 2022. We’ve been conducting research on the next generation of major donors for a decade now, reporting our findings about this group we call ‘Generation Impact‘ in Alliance and elsewhere. We’ve argued that these Gen Xers and Millennials who have the capacity for big giving – either from their own wealth creation or because of the historic wealth transfer – promise to be the ‘most significant donors in history’. Members of this cohort find themselves with unprecedented resources and are choosing to address societal ills earlier and throughout their lives. They are also figuring out their philanthropic identities during an historic evolution of the methods of achieving impact – and show a strong desire to drive that change even faster.

Exploring Next Gen Donors
Given that the next gen stands to become the most significant donors in U.S. history and will shape our world in profound ways, this tool is an opportunity for the families and professionals who support next gen to ask them key questions about the donors they are becoming, as well as for next gen donor’s own self exploration. This deck of 50 question cards can help users to be intentional about their choices, strategic in creating action plans, and effective in exploring their philanthropic approach with others. Each card features an open-ended question inviting users to discuss role models, impact, generational giving, values and aspirations in an accessible way. The discussion questions provide facilitators and users alike with a unique forum to find comfort and understanding and help foster dialogue concerning this complex topic.
Time, Talent, Treasure & Ties
We all have resources we can contribute to make a difference in the world. As next gen donors, you have them as well. You want to think proactively about how you can make the most impact while giving in a way that feels meaningful. In this interactive exercise, developed by 21/64 in partnership with the Greater Houston Community Foundation, participants examine how they gave their time, talent, treasure and ties in the past year and begin to formulate a plan that aligns their four T's with their values and vision for the year ahead.

Tips: Engaging Generation Impact as Teens
In the course of researching and writing Generation Impact: How Next Gen Donors Are Revolutionizing Giving, we were struck by how often the donor education and philanthropic identify of those we surveyed and interviewed began forming in their teens. While there are other helpful resources in the field of “youth philanthropy,” the material here is based specifically on what we learned from our research on Gen X and Millennial major donors— those who make up what we call “Generation Impact.”
We share insights here into how they watched, learned, and participated in philanthropy as children and teens in ways that shaped—and continue to shape—them as donors. We present nine practical tips intended for anyone seeking to support and engage teen next gen donors, and we include some quotes from our research interviews to illustrate these tips.
