Stephanie Miller has been working in the field of strategic philanthropy for 20 years, with a particular interest in family foundations. Raised in Montreal, Stephanie received a Masters degree from McGill University and has since spent her career working as a grant seeker, grantmaker and on the ground as a local and national community worker in Canada, the U.S. and overseas. Most recently, Stephanie built and led the Trust for Learning, a national collaborative foundation focusing on early childhood education, and served as its Executive Director for eight years. The Trust was instrumental in convening education leaders and funders from across the country to collaborate on critical state and national level education priorities. Prior to that, she served as a senior program officer at the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, Canada’s largest private family foundation and focused primarily on building national, multi-year, proactive initiatives in a range of areas including education, community economic development and the environment. Working closely with the Foundation leadership and family trustees, Stephanie developed large and small grantmaking priorities and programs that helped to give shape and meaningful direction to the McConnell family’s passions and giving goals. She believes that good grantmaking and program development is a craft. Stephanie has consulted with numerous foundations and not-for-profit organizations – helping them find ways of making their giving and community service more effective. Through facilitated visioning sessions, landscape research and analysis as well as careful crafting of program and giving strategies, Stephanie has been able to guide family donors and foundation program staff to thoughtful and effective work.
