Ruth Bender is the Director of Donor Advised Funds at the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund. Annually, the Federation’s 900 Donor Advised Funds pay out over 9,000 grants totaling over $50 million in grantmaking. In this role, Ruth has overseen two software implementations as well as a restructure of the DAF’s investment options. Prior, as Philanthropic Advisor with Tides Foundation in San Francisco, Ruth specialized in international grantmaking and family foundation management. She managed Tides’ global grantmaking efforts, enabling U.S.-based donors to efficiently fund organizations overseas; provided family and other private foundation clients with program and management services; and worked with Tides’ Corporate Giving clients, helping to facilitate both domestic and global giving for corporations and corporate foundations. Prior to Tides Foundation, Ruth worked as Director of Special Events at The Breast Cancer Fund. Ruth sits on the Board of Directors of Caravan to Class and in the past has served on the Boards of Telluride Mountainfilm, GirlVentures and Grantmakers without Borders. Until recently, served on the Steering Committees for Northern California Grantmakers’ Family Philanthropy Exchange and American Jewish World Service’s Bay Area Global Circle. She enjoys traveling off the beaten path, documentary photography, telemark skiing, hiking with her dog, and renovating her house. Ruth holds a B.A. in Psychology from Colby College and Certificates in Sustainable Management and Sports and Sustainability from the Presidio Graduate School
