Elaine is a communications strategist, writer, and philanthropic advisor with 20 years serving family foundations, nonprofits, and grantmaker groups. A skilled listener and master content synchronizer,Elaine has personally interviewed more than 1,000 foundation board, executive, and staff members on best practices in philanthropic governance, management, and grantmaking. She is a 21/64 multigenerational family facilitator and a founding member of the National Network of Consultants to Grantmakers, and has a wide range of experience in communications, program, governance, and grants management.
Elaine authored more than a dozen field-respected books and hundreds of tools, articles, and guides for family, community, and corporate foundations, published through the Council on Foundations, National Center of Family Philanthropy, and Exponent Philanthropy. This body of work shares themes that have strengthened the field of philanthropy and elevated its impact.
In addition to her work in communications with large foundations, Elaine works directly with founders and boards on governance, strategy, and succession, leading and facilitating family retreats, revisiting mission and strategy, managing and communicating change, and engaging the next generation.

Originally from Annapolis, Maryland, Elaine recently moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Connecticut shoreline, and lives with her husband Ted and three elementary-age daughters. She has a Masters in Science in Writing, and a Bachelors in English Literature and Language. An adventurer at heart, Elaine lived for four years on the island of Maui, has traveled to 30 countries and counting, and has backpacked 60-miles of the Appalachian Trail.
